The merpeople in “Simon’s Quest” crack me up, because they show how rote the gameplay comes when you’re backtracking or grinding for hearts. What was once a challenge or an obstacle in the original game is now a minor inconvenience, not worth a second thought. And yeah, maybe you eventually become good enough at a game (either through leveling or through skill) where they are more of an annoyance than a threat, but it’s all a question of how engaged a game makes you while playing.
